Studying the statistics of car accidents

We all know that cars can be dangerous. But many people, including those living in and near Pottsville, Pennsylvania, may not fully appreciate or understand just how often accidents occur, or how many accidents affect those of us living in the United States.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's website offers multiple statistics regarding car accidents and their inherent dangers. While most car accidents are relatively minor and might lead to some damage to motor vehicles, serious accidents also occur, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of Americans each year.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania residents are also vulnerable to serious accidents. Throughout the United States, in 2015, motor vehicle accidents killed over 35,000 Americans. In Pennsylvania alone, 1,200 were killed. There were nearly 4,700 motorcyclists killed in the U.S., and over 53,000 pedestrians killed.

The reasons for car accidents vary. In some instances, they are true "accidents." Hazards on the roads and inclement weather could play a role. But, in thousands of other incidents, the accidents are the result of a driver's negligence. Whether it is distracted driving, such as texting while driving, eating or fidgeting with the radio, driver fatigue or driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, there are many ways to cause an accident. Victims of a car accident may be entitled to compensation for their injuries, although this is not always easy to prove. It is often in a victim's best interest to work with a law firm familiar with car accidents to determine whether or not a driver could be held liable for the accident that led to the injury.
